Tracked Vehicles

T

A tracked vehicle moves on one or more revolving tracks instead of conventional wheels. The larger contact area of the track reduces ground pressure, making the vehicle suitable for use on soft, uneven or muddy ground. They offer high off-road mobility, traction and stability, particularly when carrying heavy loads or for military applications. They are commonly used in construction and forestry machinery, agricultural vehicles, and armoured military vehicles. They are driven by a tracked undercarriage, which is typically part of a complex drive system incorporating a transmission Transmission The function of a vehicle transmission is to adjust the torque and speed, and to transfer engine power to the drive wheels. , brakes and a steering mechanism. Compared to wheeled vehicles, disadvantages include higher maintenance requirements, lower speed and noisier driving behaviour on solid surfaces.
