Augsburg, April 04, 2024 – Renk Group AG, a leading global player for mission-critical propulsion technologies in various military and civilian end markets, and Dutch shipbuilder Damen Naval have developed a propulsion solution dovetailed to the requirements of ASW frigates and focused on quiet running and high resistance to external influences. The gear units are integral to the CODLAD (COmbined Diesel-eLectric And Diesel) propulsion system.

“We have a long working relationship with RENK, and we are delighted to have them on board for this project as well,” says Project Director Joop Noordijk of Damen Naval. “The ASW frigates will be unrivalled in both design and capabilities, and we can’t wait to see them take shape in the coming years. We are steadily finding our suppliers and partners for this project, and we are particularly pleased that with Schelde Gears, this contract has a connection so close to home to us.”

Damen Naval already uses RENK's customised propulsion solutions for the German F126 multi-purpose combat frigates for the German Navy and the globally successful Sigma-class frigates. This contract adds the ASW frigates to the list.

"This propulsion system is a milestone in the naval sector and this contract slots seamlessly into the close collaboration between our two companies", says Nils Oesterlen, Head of Marine at RENK. "Proven components from propulsion systems like Germany's F125 and F126 frigates, the Italian FREMM and Korea's FFX-III class make the gear unit the robust, maintenance-friendly and reliable core of the propulsion system."

RENK, moreover, will be supporting the maritime industry of the Netherlands though its Dutch subsidiary Schelde Gears B.V., headquartered like Damen Naval in Vlissingen. The first gear units are scheduled for yard delivery and installation in October 2025. Damen Naval is set to hand over the first of the ASW frigates in 2028.
